Who was First to North America?
Genesis 1:28
“Then God blessed them, and God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth...”
The conventional understanding has always been that North America was populated by people who crossed from Asia to Alaska via the Bering Strait and then migrated down the West Coast. Eventually, some...

New Evolutionary Ideas about the Earth

Psalm 19:1
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”

StarsWe know how the Earth and the other planets of the Solar System were formed, don’t we? In the beginning, there was a lot of dust around the Sun, and gravity caused particles to stick together, eventually forming planets. And the dust was formed by a supernova explosion.

Close Encounters

Isaiah 45:18
“For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.”

Man looking at model of a faceWhat do we make of it when people tell us that they have seen a UFO? Creation speaker and writer Gary Bates has studied the phenomenon of UFOlogy for years.

He points out that the largest percentage of supposed sightings of UFOs are no such thing.

UFO

Hebrews 10:10
“By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

Illustration of a flying saucerIn the 1970s, Larry Norman – the grandfather of Christian rock – sang a song called “Unidentified Flying Object”, which included the words:

If there’s life on other planets, then I’m sure that He must know
And He’s been there once already
And has died to save their souls.

The Other Blue Planet

Genesis 1:16b
“He made the stars also.”

PlanetOur own Earth is often described as the Blue Planet because that is how it looks from space, where the large surface covering of water (about 77%) reflects light in the blue region of the spectrum. Mars, by contrast, is the Red Planet. Its rocky, desert surface has a reddish color about it, and photographs from the planet’s surface, taken by various robot probes, show the sky with a light pink hue.

Cosmic Climate Change

Genesis 8:22
“While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”

Sunspot“Climate Change Denier” is a derogatory term, used against those who are skeptical about changes in global climate having been caused by human industrial activity. The term is, however, used to imply that such skeptics deliberately deny obvious facts about changes in climate. This is not so. Changes in climate are observable, repeatable science.

Colliding in the Sky

Psalm 8:3-4
“When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?”

Neutron starsAstronomers have apparently witnessed a collision between two neutron stars. This collision apparently produced gold, worth about $10 octillion (109). But before you jump in your car to go and collect some of this bounty, you need to know that this collision occurred 130 million light years away. The discovery, such as it is, was reported by a number of news agencies in October 2017.

The Dead Oceans of Enceladus

Psalm 147:4
“He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.”

planetIn a previous Creation Moment, I referred to the Cassini space program studying Enceladus – a moon of Saturn. Two interesting new studies about ocean-covered worlds like Enceladus have recently been published, giving conflicting information.

Joshua's Long Eclipse?

Joshua 10:13
“And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.”

SunsetOne passage of the Bible that a lot of people stumble over is found in Joshua 10. The Israelites were engaged in a battle with Adonizedek, King of Jerusalem. In order to gain success, Joshua prayed to the Lord, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon.” As a result of this prayer, the sun stayed in the sky for a whole day. In other words, sunset to sunset lasted 48 hours instead of the normal 24.

Seeking the Oort Cloud

Psalm 8:3-4
“When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?”

Comet in night skyComets are fascinating objects. At their best, they can be spectacular objects in the sky, with beautiful tails pointing away from the Sun.

Evolution of the Early Earth

Genesis 1:1-2
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”

Image: Artist's rendering of the the birth of a planetMany people are aware that evolutionary astrophysicists believe that the Earth came into existence about 4.5 billion years ago. The formation of this planet-size lump of rock allegedly happened by gravitational accretion from the dust that had previously swirled around the Sun. One grain of dust would attract another. Gradually, one lump would attract another.

Life on Earth from Meteorites

Isaiah 45:18
"For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else."

Image: Meteors in spaceLife on Earth began somewhere between 3.7 and 4.5 billion years ago, after meteorites splashed down and leached essential elements into warm little ponds, say scientists.

The End of a Space Mission

1 Corinthians 3:19
“For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.”

Image: SaturnThe Cassini-Huygens Mission, which ended in 2017, was, by any stretch of the imagination, a remarkable human achievement. Launched on October 15, 1997, the craft was active for nearly 20 years before its final descent into the oblivion of Saturn's gravity on September 15, 2017.

Solar Eclipse

Genesis 1:16
“And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.”

Image: Solar EclipseMany of us in the United States watched the total eclipse of the Sun in 2017. I was at my place of work in the state of Washington, where the eclipse was 98%.

The Stars Died

Psalm 8:3-4
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

The atheist physicist Lawrence Krauss believes he has life figured out. As a cosmologist, he adheres to the Big Bang view of origins, believing that the universe came into existence from a singularity about 13.7 billion years ago.

Planet Nine

Psalm 8:3-4
"When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?"

When I was a boy, there were nine planets. I remember reports in 1982 about the discovery of a tenth planet. Nobody actually saw the alleged tenth planet through a telescope. However, measurements were made of the orbits of other planets, and Image: Artist impression of Erisperturbations from where they thought the orbits should be were noted. It was assumed that these perturbations were caused by a large planet beyond the orbit of Pluto.

Pluto

Psalm 8:3-4
"When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?"

Do you feel sorry for Pluto? It isn’t a planet anymore.

Of course, you might want to point out to me that this is old news. Pluto was reclassified in 2006, being downgraded to the new category of dwarf planet. Thus, the Solar System went back to being a collection of eight planets, just as it had been before the discovery of Pluto in 1930.

A Convention of Light

Genesis 1:16-18
"And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good."

If you fire a beam of laser light at the Moon, how long will it take to get there?

At first, some might suggest that this is a relatively easy Artist rendering of light traveling.problem. Speed equals distance divided by time, so surely we can calculate how long the light will take. But do we really know how fast the light travels from Earth to Moon? Creationist astrophysicist Dr. Jason Lisle suggests that we don’t.

Life on Mars for Real

Genesis 8:22
"While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease."

David Bowie sang:

Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

Curiosity for Life on Mars

Isaiah 45:18
“For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.”

Like many people of my generation, I was fascinated by the Apollo Moon landings from 1969 through 1972. As a small boy, I keenly watched all the special programs that I could on BBC TV. I Space exploration roverclearly remember one of the BBC experts, signing off the Apollo 17 broadcast, by telling us that NASA would certainly have people on Mars before 1990. I waited eagerly, but it never happened.

Aging Stars

Genesis 1:16b
“…he made the stars also.”

Today, I want to talk about aging stars. But I am not referring to your favorite movie icon of yesteryear. Instead, I am talking about stars in the universe.

How old is a star? And how can we tell?
