Atoning Pitch
Genesis 6:14
"Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch."
Wood will get waterlogged, if it is left in water for too long. And yet wood has often been used throughout history to build boats and ships. For example, the city of Pensacola, Florida, was, in many...

Philosophy

Abel Saved by Faith

Hebrews 11:6
"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."

We have talked before about Cain and Abel, and we have seen how Cain’s offering was rejected because it was his attempt to get right with God by his own power. We have also seen how Abel’s offering was acceptable because it was the necessary blood sacrifice to atone Artist rendering of Able's offering for sin.

God: Natural or Supernatural

Genesis 1:31a
"And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good."

C.S. Lewis suggested that those who deny the supernatural can still believe in a god of sorts. He said:

The Beginning of Wisdom

Proverbs 9:10
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”

What arrogance to tell someone that he is a fool! How much more arrogant, if that man is a highly educated, highly qualified scientist, with a string of degrees and doctorates to his name. Such a man might think that he has the right to comment on the existence, or rather the non-existence, of God, and that his Antique Bible on a tableintellectual superiority will be sufficient to convince his hearers.

Something New Under the Sun

Ecclesiastes 1:9
The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

There are some who think that the book of Ecclesiastes is a depressing book. The writer—an old man, called Qohelet (the Preacher)—seems to be musing on a life of achievement, that he now thinks is meaningless.

A Lesson from an Hourglass

Genesis 5:5,8
Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died….Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died….

Calculating the age of the earth, from empirical data, requires presuppositions. The scientists, who calculate the age of rocks using, for example, uranium-lead dating, are intelligent people, and completely capable of performing careful experiments. Their care, coupled with their technology, means that they make highly accurate measurements of the amounts of uranium and lead.

Is the Earth Flat?

Isaiah 40:22
It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

A number of Christians have, in the last couple of years, posted articles and YouTube videos, and even published books, stating that the Earth is not a sphere, but is flat.

What Is the Matter, My Lord?

Ephesians 5:6a
Let no man deceive you with vain words…

In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, there is a famous scene where Hamlet is talking to Polonius. Hamlet – for various reasons too complicated to go into now – is feigning madness. Polonius finds him reading a book, and asks “What do you read, my Lord?” Hamlet answers “Words, words, words.”

When Did God Create Angels?

Job 38:7
When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

One question that I get asked a lot, after my talks, is “When did God create angels?” It is a fair question. Angels are created beings, so it is fair to ask when God made them. The assumption in many people’s minds is that God must have made them before the Creation Week. However, this idea does not seem tenable.

Heavens, Earth and Everything

Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

What exactly did God create? How much of everything did He create? An impression is sometimes given, by those who want to accept long, deep timescales, that there is much in the universe, which is just going on and on, and has gone on since eternity past.

Approaching Genesis

Genesis 1:1a
In the beginning God…

What are your thoughts as you start reading the book of Genesis?

Visitors from Mars

Job 19:23-24
Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book! That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever!

It must have been pretty disconcerting for many people, who heard the famous Orson Welles 1938 radio adaptation of HG Wells’ The War of the Worlds. The radio play was made to sound like an actual news broadcast. Apparently, there was widespread panic among the listening audience, who were sure that they were learning about invaders from Mars.

Evolution: A Student Car

Romans 1:20
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

When I was a university student in the late 70s and early 80s, few students had cars. One of the young men that I shared accommodation with was one of the lucky few. Student cars of that era were infamous! My friend’s car fit into this category. When the fender fell off, he tied it back on with Evolution: A Student Carstring.

Should We Teach Our Children Evolution?

Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

In creation ministries, such as this, we are very eager that people should see the fallacies and the lack of a good scientific basis for evolutionism. Instead, we point people to the factual basis for science, found in the pages of God’s Word. It is particularly important that we do not allow our children to be indoctrinated by the godlessness of secular philosophies. It is for reasons such as this, that many parents prefer their children to be educated in Christian schools, or to be homeschooled.

The Most Offensive Verse

Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

I recently recorded a Creation Moments program about the Trinity, as reflected in the first verse of the Bible. My reason for revisiting this matter is for two reasons. 1. I read a blog, entitled “Genesis 1:1 – the Most Offensive Verse in the Bible”, and 2. A recent visit from religious people to my door.

Which Way the Wind Blows

John 3:7-8
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

As I sat in my office, to write this program, the wind was howling outside. We have some idea, today, of why the wind blows, as the atmosphere contains shifting areas of high and low pressure. However, the direction of the wind is not simply from high to low – other factors, such as the rotation of the Earth, are also important.

Three in One in Genesis

Colossians 1:16
For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

One of the most fundamental doctrines about the nature of God is the doctrine of the Trinity. This primary doctrine states that there is only one Being called God. At the same time, we find in the Bible that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all described as God, and as Persons in their own right. Therefore, God is One Being, yet Three Persons.

Life and Physics

Colossians 1:17
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

It is rumored that GK Chesterton said “When a man stops believing in God, he does not believe in nothing – he believes in anything”. Of course, the quote is somewhat inaccurate. It was actually said by Émile Cammaerts, in his book The Laughing Prophet: The Seven Virtues and G. K.

Aliens in the Dark Matter

Romans 1:21
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke once said “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. I guess it is true that the concept of having all the information of the Internet on my pocket cellphone would have seemed like magic to me, during my teenage years in the 1970s. The quote has often been used to suggest that super-intelligent alien lifeforms would appear to us like deities, if they ever visited us. Astrobiologist Caleb Scharf has now suggested that some super-advanced alien technology might not appear to us like magic, but like physics.

The People Who Deliberately Forget

2 Peter 3:3-6
Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

Uniformitarianism is a big word to describe the prevailing scientific philosophy of the world. It is the idea that everything in nature has proceeded in a regular and smooth fashion since the start of the Universe.

Science Confronts Meditation Claims

Psalm 119:148
"Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word."

Many people promote meditation as harmless and healthful. Of course, growing interest in meditation cannot be separated from the increased popularity of Eastern and New Age religion.
